Daily Devotion: Hierarchy Of Truth by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 2:15-22 KJV

Key Verse:  "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
- 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

Doctrines that are specifically spelled out, such as 'we are not to commit adultery' (Exodus 20:14) are easily understood and rarely controversial. Albeit, some cults twist what the Bible says and try to justify the adultery, but all truly born again Christians would agree that adultery is a sin. However, born again saved Christians may have a difference of opinion on non-core doctrines in the Bible, or things that appear to be contradictions. So, what is a person to do?

A good Hierarchy Of Truth to follow when there are differences of opinions or perceived contradictions in the Bible is to prioritize the following sources in this order:

1. Spoken Word of God in the Bible
2. Other written Words of God in the Bible
3. Ante-Nicene Fathers writings
4. Non-Canonical Books referenced in the Bible and/or used by early church leaders

The first two when combined make up our Bible. The Ante-Nicene Fathers writings through A.D. 325 documents the early church right after Jesus and before it was corrupted by external influences. Finally, there are the non-canonical books referenced in the Bible and/or used by early church leaders. We will look at each of these in the next few devotionals to understand their importance.

By following this hierarchy of truth, you can navigate any contradictions or difficulties you may encounter in the Bible and deepen your understanding of God's Word.
