Daily Devotion: Delight Yourself In The Lord by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Psalms 37:1-8 KJV

Key Verse:  "Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."
- Psalms 37:4 KJV

When we think of delight, we often imagine moments of happiness — a warm sunrise, the laughter of loved ones, or a quiet victory after a long struggle. But in Psalm 37:4, David invites us to a deeper, richer joy, a delight in the Lord Himself. To delight in the Lord means to find our deepest pleasure, satisfaction, and fulfillment in who God is not merely in what He gives. It is a relationship built on love, trust, and nearness. The more we know Him, the more our hearts align with His will, and the more our desires begin to reflect His own.

When we truly delight in Him, He reshapes the longings of our hearts. What once may have been self-centered becomes God-centered. And then, as our desires harmonize with His purpose, He joyfully fulfills them — not because He must, but because it delights Him to bless those who love Him.

Trust and Surrender

David continues this thought in the next verse: "Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass."Psalm 37:5 (KJV)

Delighting in the Lord is inseparable from trusting Him. When we surrender our plans, fears, and ambitions into His hands, we find peace. Our trust grows as we learn that His ways are higher and wiser than our own (Isaiah 55:8–9).

The one who delights in the Lord doesn’t anxiously chase after what the world calls success. Instead, their heart rests in the assurance that “no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11).

The Source of True Joy

The world offers fleeting pleasure, but joy rooted in God never fades. As Psalm 16:11 (KJV) declares: "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

This joy doesn’t depend on circumstances — it flows from His presence. When we seek Him daily through prayer, worship, and the Word, our hearts grow sensitive to His Spirit. The burdens of life feel lighter because His delight becomes our strength (Nehemiah 8:10).

Conclusion

To delight in the Lord means to find your ultimate satisfaction, pleasure, and fulfillment in His presence, His character, and His willThe Lord promises to bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday, and to make you ride on the heights of the earth, feeding you with the heritage of Jacob. Therefore, let your heart be filled with gratitude and joy, knowing that the God who created you and loves you is the source of all true delight. As you meditate on His Word and spend time in His presence, you will experience the deep satisfaction that only He can provide.
