Daily Devotion: What Price Would You Sell Your Soul For by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Mark 8:31-38 KJV

Key Verse:  "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"
- Mark 8:36 KJV

There is a haunting question in our key verse above, one that pierces through every generation: What is your soul worth to you? We live in a world obsessed with profit, success, fame, and pleasure. Yet Jesus asks a question that exposes the emptiness of it all. What good is it to have everything your heart could desire, such as wealth, power, and recognition, if in the end, you lose the one thing that lasts forever: your soul?

Esau’s Tragic Trade

The Bible gives us a vivid example in Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.

“And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? … Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink… thus Esau despised his birthright.”
Genesis 25:32, 34 (KJV)

Esau traded something eternal for something temporary, his spiritual inheritance for a moment’s satisfaction. Hunger clouded his judgment; desire drowned out discernment. He made a deal that he could never undo.

How many today are doing the same? Selling purity for popularity. Trading integrity for income. Sacrificing devotion for distraction. The devil doesn’t always buy souls with silver, sometimes he pays in small, comfortable compromises.

A Soul’s True Worth

Your soul was made by God and for God. It is eternal, priceless. Jesus Himself paid the highest possible price to redeem it:

“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
1 Corinthians 6:20 (KJV)

If Christ valued your soul enough to shed His blood for it, how could anything on earth compare? The world’s treasures fade; its pleasures perish. But your soul will live forever, in the presence of God or apart from Him.

The Wise Exchange

Instead of selling your soul for the world’s temporary gain, Jesus invites you to exchange your life for something eternal:

“Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
Mark 8:34 (KJV)

When you surrender your life to Christ, you lose nothing of true worth and gain everything that matters — forgiveness, peace, purpose, and everlasting life.

Conclusion

Jesus calls us to a higher standard. He teaches that our true need is not for material satisfaction, but to "seek first His kingdom and righteousness". As we reflect on our own lives, we must ask: What are we trading? Are we sacrificing integrity, faith, or our relationship with God for convenience, comfort, or approval? The answer to Mark 8 is not found in what we gain, but in what we lose. Let us remember that no earthly gain, no matter how great, can compensate for the loss of our soul. Instead, let us cling to the greater reward: the eternal life offered through Christ, who is our true and lasting inheritance.

Are you Saved?
