Daily Devotion: Human Wisdom by J.E. Smith

Key Verse:  "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness."
- 1 Corinthians 3:19 KJV

Human wisdom often sparkles on the surface, clever words, deep reasoning, and scholarly knowledge. Yet, compared to God’s eternal understanding, it is as brief and frail as a candle before the sun. Scripture teaches us that though learning and knowledge have their place, they must always submit to the wisdom of the One who created all things. In all our searching, there remains a truth that humbles even the brightest mind: human wisdom is limited.

The Apostle Paul reminds us that the wisdom of this world, no matter how brilliant it may appear, is foolishness with God. Our intellect can design cities, write books, and reach the stars, but it cannot save a single soul. True wisdom does not come from human understanding, but from reverence toward God.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)

True wisdom begins with humility. When man leans on his intellect apart from the fear of the Lord, understanding becomes prideful, leading not to light, but to confusion. Human reasoning cannot reach heaven’s throne; only faith can bridge that divide.

The more we trust in our own understanding, the more we drift from truth. God’s wisdom, on the other hand, begins with surrender. It begins when we bow our intellect before His infinite knowledge and admit: “Lord, Thou knowest all things.”

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

Heavenly wisdom transforms character. It fills us with peace instead of arrogance, mercy instead of judgment, and purity instead of ambition. It leads us to live as Christ lived, with truth, humility, and love.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
James 3:17 (KJV)

Let us, therefore, pray not for human wisdom that fades, but for divine wisdom that endures forever. May our minds and hearts be guided by the Spirit of God, who teaches us truth and leads us in peace. The humble believer who seeks God’s counsel through Scripture and prayer will find a wisdom that never fails, wisdom that guides, comforts, and leads to life everlasting.
