Daily Devotion: Jesus, The Great I AM by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Revelation 1:1-8 KJV

Key Verse:  "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."
- Revelation 1:8 KJV

When John beheld the glorified Christ on the Isle of Patmos, he saw not merely the Jesus who once walked the dusty roads of Galilee, but the eternal, sovereign Lord who reigns before all beginnings and beyond all endings. The voice that spoke from heaven declared, “I am Alpha and Omega.” These are not just titles of time, but revelations of timeless glory. Jesus is the great “I AM,” the self-existent One who depends on none and sustains all.

In Exodus 3:14, God revealed Himself to Moses as “I AM THAT I AM,” declaring His eternal, unchanging nature. When Jesus echoed these words in John 8:58, saying, “Before Abraham was, I am,” He revealed His divine identity as one with the Father, the same unchanging God who spoke from the burning bush. This claim was not lost on His hearers; they understood that He was proclaiming Himself to be the Lord of eternity, the God of Israel, robed in human flesh.

Revelation 1 shows this truth unveiled in radiant majesty. John describes the risen Christ with “his head and his hairs white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire” (Revelation 1:14). This vision is not one of weakness, but of eternal authority and purity. The One who once was humbled unto death now lives forevermore, holding “the keys of hell and of death” (Revelation 1:18).

What comfort this brings to believers. The same “I AM” who parted the Red Sea now parts the shadows of our fears. The One who said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12) still shines in the darkness of human hearts. The One who declared, “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11) still guides and guards His flock. The One who promised, “I am the resurrection, and the life” (John 11:25) stands today as the guarantee of our eternal hope.

In every season: past, present, and future, Jesus remains unchanged. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8). The Great I AM stands at the center of Revelation’s glory, reminding us that history is not spiraling into chaos, but moving toward His promised return. He is, He was, and He is to come, the Almighty.

Let our hearts, then, rest in this eternal truth. When life shifts, when people fail, when the world trembles, the Great I AM remains firm. To trust Him is to anchor our souls in eternity itself.
