Daily Devotion: The Vital Role of Jesus' Resurrection in Salvation by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Mark 16:1-8 KJV

Key Verse:  "And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him."
- Mark 16:6 KJV

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a core belief of Christian faith and theology. It is a crucial component of our understanding of salvation and the forgiveness of sins. In this post, we will explore the importance of Jesus' resurrection and its relevance to salvation.

A Sign of His Divine Power

In Matthew 28:2-6 (KJV), we read the following about the resurrection of Jesus, "And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."

This passage highlights the divine power of Jesus by showing that he was able to overcome death and rise from the grave.  He could not be contained by the tomb, or the Roman soldiers (Matthew 27:62-65), or even by death itself. His resurrection is a powerful demonstration of his divine nature and the authority he holds over life and death.

A Sign of Our Future Resurrection

"Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." (1 Corinthians 15:12-22)

This passage emphasizes the importance of Jesus' resurrection in our salvation. Without his resurrection, our faith would be in vain, and we would remain in our sins. However, because Jesus rose from the dead, we have the hope of eternal life and the promise of our own resurrection.

A Sign of Jesus' Power Over Life and Death

Several people in the Bible were raised from the dead. But none of them raised themselves from the dead, but one, Jesus. Consider first John 2:19b (KJV), which records Jesus' prophecy of His resurrection, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." In this verse, Jesus speaks of His own body as a temple that will be destroyed (through His death) and raised up (through His resurrection).

Next, we turn to John 10:17-18b (KJV), where Jesus speaks of His authority over life and death, "Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again." In these verses, Jesus asserts His authority to lay down His life (through His death) and to take it up again (through His resurrection).

Conclusion

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a fundamental aspect of Christian faith and theology. It is a crucial component of our understanding of salvation and the forgiveness of our sins. The Bible provides clear evidence of Jesus' authority and power over His own death and resurrection. Jesus raised Himself from the dead, not only fulfilling prophecy but also offering hope of eternal life to all who believe in Him. As we continue to explore the role of Jesus' resurrection in the Bible, let us be reminded of its power and significance in our lives.
