Daily Devotion: Pride Is A Source of Evil by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Proverbs 8:6-13 KJV

Key Verse:  "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate."
- Proverbs 8:13 KJV

Pride is a dangerous source of evil that can lead us away from God and towards evil which will cause us to stumble in our spiritual journey. The Bible warns against the dangers of pride, reminding us of the consequences of an arrogant spirit. In this devotional, we'll explore the impact of pride on our lives and how pride can manifest as a source of evil, drawing insights from the timeless wisdom of the Holy Scriptures for guidance and direction.

Pride is a source of evil because it blinds us to our own weaknesses and limitations, causing us to believe that we are invincible and that we have all the answers. This mindset is dangerous, as it hinders our spiritual growth and separates us from God's loving guidance. As the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:3-4 (KJV), "If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings."

In Proverbs 8:13 (KJV), we are taught, "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate." This verse teaches us if we truly fear the Lord we should hate evil which includes pride and arrogance. We should never be arrogant or filled with pride, instead we should seek to hate these things and we should also fear the Lord and follow his ways.

Furthermore, Proverbs 1:7 teaches us that, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction." Proud people have all the answers and do not want advice from anyone, including God. That leaves them in a precarious position with the Lord.

As we reflect on the teachings of the Bible, let us remember the importance of humility and the dangers of pride. By recognizing our weaknesses and limitations, we can become teachable, receptive to God's instruction, and open to the transformative power of His word. In the words of James 4:10, "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."
