Daily Devotion: Ambassadors For Christ by J.E. Smith

Key Verse:  "Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God."
- 2 Corinthians 5:20 KJV

As Paul points out in our key verse above, once we are saved we are ambassadors for Christ. Being an ambassador for Christ is similar to the role of a foreign ambassador, representing a sovereign nation in a foreign land. Just as a diplomat acts as a go-between for two countries, Christians are called to act as representatives of God's Kingdom on earth.

Ambassadors to foreign countries and Christians as ambassadors of Christ share several similarities. Here are a few listed below:

1. Both roles involve representing a higher authority in a foreign land. Just as a political ambassador represents their home country's interests and values, Christians represent Jesus and His gospel to the world around them. In the context of 2 Corinthians 5:20, Paul describes Christians as ambassadors for Christ, meaning they are representatives of Jesus Himself.

This role involves living in a foreign land (the world, in our case) but belonging to a different kingdom (God's kingdom), and it is a role that should not be taken lightly, because a lot is at stake.

2. Both ambassadors and Christians as ambassadors are tasked with conveying important messages. Political ambassadors convey the official position of their sovereign body, while Christians convey the message of reconciliation with God through faith in Christ.

This message is about changing the relationship between sinful humans and a holy God, which is restored through Jesus' work on the cross.

3. Moreover, both roles require living in a way that reflect the values and principles of the authority they represent. Christians are called to live in a way that reflects their faith and to convince others to do the same, just as political ambassadors are expected to live and act in a manner that reflect their home country's values.

4. Finally, both roles involve a high level of responsibility and appearance. Both need to be mindful of their actions, as they are constantly being watched and judged by those around them.

In conclusion, being an ambassador for Christ means embracing the dual roles of diplomat and advocate. We represent the Kingdom of God, advocating for reconciliation and peace, just as a foreign ambassador would advocate for their nation. Let us embrace this calling with the same dedication and purpose as any diplomat would, knowing that our message has the power to transform lives and bring eternal life.
