Daily Devotion: The Bravest Prayer In The Bible by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Psalm 139:17-24 KJV

Key Verse:  "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:"
- Psalm 139:23 KJV

When we do something wrong we pause and hope that no one saw what we did. We may even go as far as hoping that God was not paying attention, but in our heart we know that God sees it all. Most of us would never ask God to carefully examine our lives to identify sin. Yet in our key verse above, that is exactly what David did.

King David had figured out that examination and testing were for his good. Here David, the author of Psalm 139, invites God to examine his heart and thoughts, asking Him to reveal any way that is not pleasing to Him. He requests God to test him to uncover any hidden sin.

His prayer highlights the importance of self-examination and seeking God's guidance. David acknowledges that God knows him better than he knows himself. Seeking God's help to identify and correct any sin that could hinder his relationship with God. It reflects a deep trust in God's wisdom and a desire to align one's life with His will.

In the context of Psalm 139, this prayer is part of a larger theme of God's omnipresence and omniscience. The psalmist acknowledges that God is present everywhere and knows everything about him, including his most intimate thoughts and feelings (Psalm 139, KJV). This awareness of God's constant presence and knowledge provides the foundation for the bravery expressed in verses 23-24.

Psalm 139 is indeed one of the bravest prayers in the Bible, as it requires a deep level of trust and vulnerability before God. It is a prayer that invites God to search our hearts and thoughts, revealing any areas of sin or wickedness, and leading us on the path of righteousness. This prayer reminds us of God's presence, His knowledge, and His desire to transform us into the image of Christ. Let us embrace this prayer with courage and faith, trusting in God's love and guidance.

We should all aspire to reach this level.
