Daily Devotion: The Ark As A Foreshadow Of Salvation by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Genesis 7:1-10 KJV

Key Verse:  "And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation."
- Genesis 7:1 KJV

When God commanded Noah to build the ark, it was more than a rescue vessel—it was a foreshadowing of salvation in Jesus Christ. The world in Noah’s day was filled with violence and corruption, yet God in His mercy provided a way of deliverance. That way was the ark, a single door, and safety from judgment. Just as the ark was God’s appointed means of saving Noah and his family, Christ is God’s appointed way of saving sinners today.

1. The Ark Was Provided by God

Noah did not invent the ark; God gave him the pattern.
“Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.” – Genesis 6:14

Salvation is not man’s idea, but God’s plan. He designed the only way of escape from judgment through His Son.
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12

2. The Ark Had One Door

The ark had a single door, the only way to enter and to be saved.
“And the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.” – Genesis 6:16b

Jesus declared, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved.” – John 10:9a

Just as there was no other entrance into the ark, there is no other entrance into eternal life apart from Christ.

3. The Ark Withstood the Judgment

When the flood came, it destroyed everything outside the ark, but those within were safe.
“And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.” – Genesis 7:16

God Himself sealed Noah and his family inside, a picture of eternal security in Christ.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…” – Romans 8:1a

The same waters that judged the world lifted the ark to safety. Likewise, the judgment of sin fell on Jesus at the cross, and all who are in Him are lifted above condemnation.

4. The Ark Was a Refuge for All Who Entered

Noah’s family was saved not by their own goodness, but by being inside the ark.
“By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house…” – Hebrews 11:7

Our safety is not in ourselves, but in Christ. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” – Ephesians 2:8

Conclusion

The ark stood as a testimony to God’s mercy before judgment fell. Just as Noah and his family were secure within the ark, those who are in Christ are secure in Him, for He has sealed us with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of our inheritance.(Ephesians 1

Today, Jesus Christ is that open door of mercy. Just as the day came when God shut the door of the ark, so one day the opportunity for salvation will close. The ark, therefore, is not merely a historical vessel but a living symbol of the salvation we have in Jesus Christ, our eternal refuge.
