Daily Devotion: One God In Three Distinct Persons by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Matthew 28:13-20 KJV

Key Verse:  "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"
Matthew 28:19 KJV

The Trinity is one God existing in three distinct Persons. The word Trinity is not used in the Bible, but the concept is throughout the New Testament and has its foundation in the Old Testament. Our finite minds struggle to comprehend the many nuances of the Trinity.

First it is important to note that Christianity is not Polytheism (the belief in or worship of more than one god.) There is only one God as described in Deuteronomy 6:4 KJV, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:" Further, 1 Corinthians 8:4 KJV states, "As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one." Also, Galatians 3:20 KJV "Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one" and 1 Timothy 2:5 KJV "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;"

Each member of the Trinity is individually distinct and is God. The Father is God as demonstrated in these verses:
  1. John 6:27 KJV, "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed."
  2. Romans 1:7 KJV, "To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ."
  3. 1 Peter 1:2 KJV, "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied."
The Son is God as demonstrated in these verses:
  1. John 1:1, 14 KJV, "[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." and "[14] And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."
  2. Colossians 2:9 KJV, "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."
  3. Hebrews 1:8 KJV, "But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom."
  4. 1 John 5:20 KJV, "And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life."
For additional information on the deity of Jesus see the previous devotional "Jesus Is Both God And The Son Of God."

The Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) is God as demonstrated in these verses:
  1. Acts 5:3-4 KJV, "[3] But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? [4] Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God."
  2. 1 Corinthians 3:16 KJV, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?"
In summary, there is one God, made up of the Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. Each is individually distinct, but all are the same God. The above picture is an excellent representation of the Trinity.
