Daily Devotion: The Heart of a Servant by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Mark 10:45-52 KJV

Key Verse:  "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."
- Mark 10:45 KJV

Servanthood lies at the very center of the Christian life. In Mark 10:45, Jesus reveals that His mission was not to be served, but to serve. This is striking because if anyone deserved to be served, it was Him. Yet He chose the path of humility and service.

To follow Christ is to adopt that same mindset. Servanthood is not about position or recognition; it is about willingly meeting the needs of others with a heart of love.

Jesus taught His disciples this truth clearly:

“But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.” — Matthew 23:11

In God’s kingdom, greatness is measured differently. It is not found in status, power, or attention, but in humility and service. The one who serves faithfully, even in unseen ways, is honored by God.

Servanthood also requires the right attitude:

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” — Colossians 3:23

When we serve others, we are ultimately serving Christ. This transforms even the smallest acts, helping someone, listening patiently, giving our time, into acts of worship.

The example of Jesus goes even deeper:

“If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” — John 13:14

Foot washing was a task reserved for the lowest servant, yet Jesus performed it. He showed that no act of service is beneath us when done in love.

Application

Consider your daily life:

  • Do you look for opportunities to serve others?
  • Are you willing to serve even when no one notices?
  • Is your service motivated by love or recognition?

Today, choose one intentional act of service, help someone in need, encourage a weary heart, or give your time without expecting anything in return.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Give me the heart of a servant. Help me to follow the example of Christ by serving others with humility and love. Remove any desire for recognition, and teach me to serve faithfully in both small and great things. May my life reflect Your grace through acts of service. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Are you Saved?
