Daily Devotion: Praying in the Spirit by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:13-20 KJV

Key Verse:  "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;"
- Ephesians 6:18 KJV

After describing the full armor of God, Paul concludes with a vital instruction in Ephesians 6:18, praying always in the Spirit. This is not another piece of armor, but the way we actively engage in spiritual warfare while wearing it.

To pray “in the Spirit” means to pray under the guidance and influence of the Holy Spirit. It is more than routine or repetition, it is prayer that is aligned with God’s will, empowered by His presence, and rooted in a living relationship with Him.

Scripture reminds us of our need for the Spirit’s help:

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought…” — Romans 8:26

There are times when we don’t know what to pray, but the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. This gives us confidence that our prayers are not limited by our understanding.

Praying in the Spirit also involves consistency and variety, “all prayer and supplication.” This includes praise, thanksgiving, confession, and intercession. It is a continual, dynamic conversation with God.

We are also called to remain spiritually alert:

“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;” — Colossians 4:2

This ties back to watchfulness; prayer that is attentive, expectant, and persistent.

Additionally, praying in the Spirit includes interceding for others:

“…supplication for all saints;” — Ephesians 6:18

Spiritual warfare is not just personal; it is communal. We are called to lift up fellow believers, standing together in prayer.

Finally, we are encouraged:

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,” — Jude 1:20

Prayer strengthens our faith and deepens our walk with God. It keeps us connected, empowered, and ready for every spiritual battle.

Application

Reflect on your prayer life:

  • Am I relying on the Holy Spirit when I pray?
  • Do I pray consistently and with variety?
  • Am I interceding for others, not just myself?

Today, take time to pray intentionally. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your words and align your heart with God’s will.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Teach me to pray in the Spirit. Help me to rely on Your guidance and to remain faithful in prayer. Strengthen my heart as I seek You, and use my prayers to impact the lives of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Are you Saved?
