Key Verse: "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked."
- Ephesians 6:16 KJV
As we continue through the armor of God, we come to the shield of faith. In Ephesians 6:16, Paul emphasizes its importance with the phrase “above all”, showing how essential faith is in spiritual warfare.
In ancient times, a soldier’s shield was large, designed to cover the whole body. It was often soaked in water so that when fiery arrows struck it, they would be extinguished immediately. In the same way, faith protects us from the enemy’s attacks, his lies, doubts, fears, and temptations.
Those “fiery darts” can come in many forms:
- Doubt about God’s promises
- Fear of the future
- Accusation and condemnation
- Temptation to turn away from God
Faith stands in opposition to all of these. Scripture defines faith clearly:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Hebrews 11:1
Faith is trusting God even when we cannot see the outcome. It is confidence in His character, His Word, and His promises.
We are also reminded:
“(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
In spiritual battles, what we see and feel can be misleading. Faith anchors us in truth beyond our circumstances.
And faith grows as we stay in God’s Word:
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17
The more we fill our hearts with Scripture, the stronger our shield becomes.
Application
Consider your faith:
- Are you actively trusting God in your current situation?
- Do you recognize the enemy’s attacks when doubt or fear arises?
- Are you strengthening your faith through God’s Word?
Today, when a negative or fearful thought comes, lift up your shield of faith. Replace the lie with God’s truth and stand firm in His promises.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Strengthen my faith in You. Help me to trust Your promises and stand firm against every attack of the enemy. When doubt or fear arises, remind me of Your truth. Let my faith grow stronger each day as I walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
