Daily Devotion: The Power of Surrender by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Romans 12:1-8 KJV

Key Verse:  "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."
- Romans 12:1 KJV

Surrender is at the heart of the Christian walk. It is the daily act of yielding our will, our desires, and our plans to God. In Romans 12:1, we are called to present ourselves as a living sacrifice, not a one-time offering, but a continual, ongoing surrender.

This kind of surrender is not forced; it is a response to “the mercies of God.” When we truly understand His grace, love, and sacrifice for us, surrender becomes a willing act of worship.

Yet surrender can be challenging. We naturally want control. We want to hold onto our plans and outcomes. But Scripture calls us to trust God completely:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

Surrender means releasing our grip and placing everything into God’s hands—our future, our struggles, our relationships, and our ambitions.

Jesus Himself modeled perfect surrender:

“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” — Luke 22:42

Even in His moment of deepest anguish, Christ chose the Father’s will over His own. This is the essence of surrender: trusting God even when the path is difficult.

There is also a promise tied to surrender:

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:” — 1 Peter 5:6

When we surrender, we place ourselves in a position for God to work in and through us. His plans are always greater, and His timing is always perfect.

Application

Take a moment to reflect:

  • Is there something in your life you are holding onto tightly?
  • Are you trusting God fully, or trying to control the outcome?
  • What would it look like to say, “Thy will be done,” in your current situation?

Today, intentionally surrender one area of your life to God, whether it’s a worry, a decision, or a desire. Place it in His hands and trust Him with the result.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I surrender my life to You. Help me to release control and trust in Your perfect will. Give me the faith to follow You, even when I do not understand. Shape my heart to desire what You desire, and let my life be a living sacrifice for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
