Daily Devotion: The Mind Of Christ by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Philippians 2:4-11 KJV

Key Verse:  "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:"
- Philippians 2:5 KJV

The call in Philippians 2:5 is both simple and profound: we are to think like Christ. Not just in moments of worship or prayer, but in our daily attitudes, decisions, and interactions with others. What is the “mind of Christ”? The surrounding verses paint a powerful picture. Jesus, though divine, chose humility over status:

“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant…” — Philippians 2:7

Christ’s mindset was one of selflessness, obedience, and sacrifice. He did not cling to His rights but surrendered them for the sake of others, even to the point of death on a cross.

This kind of thinking runs counter to our natural instincts. The world encourages self-promotion, pride, and independence. But Scripture calls us higher:

“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 2:16

As believers, we are not left to figure this out on our own. Through the Holy Spirit, God shapes our thoughts, aligning them more closely with Christ’s.

To have the mind of Christ means:

  • Choosing humility over pride
  • Serving rather than seeking to be served
  • Obeying God even when it is difficult
  • Loving others sacrificially

It also requires transformation:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” — Romans 12:2

This renewal is ongoing. Every day, we must surrender our thoughts, attitudes, and desires to God.

Application

Ask yourself:

  • Do my thoughts reflect Christ’s humility?
  • Am I quick to serve, or do I seek recognition?
  • How do I respond when obedience costs me something?

Today, intentionally adopt Christ’s mindset in one situation—whether at home, work, or in a difficult conversation.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Teach me to think like Christ. Help me to walk in humility, to serve others with a willing heart, and to obey You in all things. Renew my mind daily so that my thoughts reflect Your truth and my life reflects Your Son. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
